Frequently Asked Questions
What are the advantages of Aubie Soaps?
Aubie Soaps are naturally gentle and made without preservatives, additives or potentially irritating extras. Like all homemade soap, Aubie Soaps contain a high amount of glycerin, a naturally occurring by-product of the soap-making process. Glycerin acts as a humectant – moisture retainer – on your skin, so after bathing, your skin feels clean but not tight or itchy. You could use Aubie Soaps on your hair, pets or clothes.
Does Aubie use lye in her soaps?
Yes. You cannot have soap without it. Lye, or sodium hydroxide as its less intimidating name, is a naturally occurring chemical from wood ash. People used to mix their fireplace ashes with animal fat drippings to make soap — a fairly easy process when cooking over an open flame. Most soaps made before bottled lye turned black from the fireplace charcoal. So much for the good old days!
Once the lye is introduced into the melted fats or oils, it goes through a chemical transition called the saponification process. The lye needs to break down even more, allowing the entire combination to change into glycerin and other inert chemicals so you won’t wash your skin off with the dirt. This is why a batch of soap needs to cure for approximately four (4) weeks.
After four (4) weeks have passed, Aubie Soaps are safe to use on your face, hair, clothing or pets. Please be sure to read each ingredient list carefully to make sure you are not allergic to any particular oil, however. If you’d like to know more about what’s in every bar of Aubie Soaps, please contact me.
I have allergies to certain products. Is there an Aubie Soaps product for me?
Aubie makes a hypo-allergenic soap called Plain Jane by special order only. It doesn’t have any seed oils in it, just olive and/or soybean oils. No dyes, no scents, no nothing. Please contact me for more information.
I’m having a party and I’d like to use soap as a hostess gift. Can Aubie Soaps accommodate special orders?
Absolutely. Aubie is always willing to make custom soaps for party favors, wedding showers, baby showers, tea parties or any special event that requires something visually interesting as well as useful. Please contact me for a customized gift solution for your party.
Please note that if your event is coming up quickly, Aubie Soaps requires five (5) weeks advance notice – four (4) weeks to make and cure your customized soap, plus one (1) week to package and ship it to you. The curing process takes a full month and there is no safe way to expedite this process.
Any other questions or requests, please contact me.
Special Notes:
Aubie never tests on animals, although a certain friend’s dog decided to eat an entire bar of Oatmeal Smoothie with no visibly ill effects. Aubie does not recommend feeding any of her soaps to your animals, however. Aubie always tests on humans; mostly herself first. No human has ever been injured while using Aubie Soaps.
Aubie Soaps also believes in using recycled and/or biodegradable wrapping. All Aubie Soaps wrapping is either recyclable or recycled. Please be responsible for the sake of our land fills: Reduce, reuse, recyle.
